Olive and Olive Oil Sector in Turkey

Olive and olive oil exports of Turkey are gradually increasing with every passing year.

Some of the countries to which Turkey exports include the United States of America, Canada, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Chile. Olive grown and olive oil produced in Turkey has reached a capacity which shall meet 20% of the world’s need.

Turkish olive and olive oil in numbers

  • 160 million olive trees
  • 1.6 million tons of olive production in “on years”
  • 200.000 metric tons olive oil production in “on years”
  • 400.000 metric tons table olive production in “on years”
  • 400.000 Turkish families work in olive and olive oil production
  • More than 500 continuous olive oil extraction mills
  • Sufficient refinery and retail packing plants using the most modern technologies
  • State and private laboratories for quality controls, which assure consistency with international standards
  • Table olives exports: 60 thousand metric tons per annum
  • Olive oil exports: 80 thousand metric tons per annum (“on years”)

Today, Turkey exports olive oil to the more than 90 countries such as the USA, Canada, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, the UAE and very few countries are left that have not experienced the excellent taste and fragrance of Turkish olive oil.

Edible olives are exported to 65 countries on average, including pre-eminently Romania, Bulgaria, USA, Germany, Australia, Iraq and the Netherlands.

Organic olive and olive oil from Anatolia

In recent years, interest in organic crops has been gradually increasing due to global warming and health reasons. Growing olive trees using organic fertilizers, not with chemical fertilizers, further enhances the quality of olive and olive oil products. Thus, it may insure to attract more demand for its taste and its high nutritional value in both the domestic and international markets. The organic of “bio” olive growing efforts which the Agricultural Combat Institution in Bornova, İzmir has started in Kemalpaşa to speed up the efforts to that effect.
